The 5 Children Who Died Because We Didn't Care...

After a busy workday, I collapse into the couch, right after dinner, with the TV remote in hand, sipping my tea. As I flip through the news channels, a headline catches my attention: Five children have died in a fire caused by an electric heater in Izmir.
I look into the details. My heart sinks, and I feel ashamed of my humanity. I can't say much more—I'm at a loss for words. I want to say, "This is where words end," but I can’t, because just as I think it can’t get any worse, another tragedy strikes. Another pain… Every day seems to bring something even more heartbreaking than the last.
What kind of trial is this? What kind of suffering is this? How much do we really care for one another as human beings? How should we care for our children? May God protect our minds and our conscience.
You might think this seems unrelated, but I can't stop thinking about the verses from Surah At-Takwir, verses 8-9: “When the girl who was buried alive is asked for what sin she was killed...” These verses keep repeating in my mind. This tragedy today, in a way, asks that same question: "What sins and neglects have led to the suffering of these children, who were ignored and left without care?"
