Sharpen as you break, get up if you've fallen

John and Mark had been friends since they were very young. Life in their neighborhood was sometimes difficult and sometimes very instructive. That evening, sitting by the beach, Burak's voice was hoarse:
“John, I'm tired, it seems like no matter how hard I try, life always hits me harder.”

John noticed the exhaustion in his friend's eyes. He took a deep breath and spoke:

“You know Mark, people sharpen as they break. They become clearer as they are chiseled. And they become beautiful as they cry. It was like this yesterday and it will be like this today.”

Mark thought for a moment. “So pain makes us better?” he asked.

John nodded. “Yes, if you think about it right. Everything that breaks us gives us great wisdom. Every chiseling reveals our true selves. When you accept your pain, you realize that it has shaped you.”

Mark looked at the dark waves of the sea. “So, from now on, with every fall, we will grow stronger?”

John smiled and nodded his head in agreement. “Exactly. Every fall is a part of being reborn.”

Mark was silent for a while. John's words echoed in his ears. Finally he took a deep breath. “But John, there are some wounds that don't heal. They are only covered over, but they always ache somewhere inside us.”

John nodded. “You are right, Mark. But you know what, those wounds make us who we are. If you ignore them, if you don't let them shape you, you can't grow. Those scars can be what keeps you going.”

Mark smiled slightly. “So every time we are broken, we learn to be stronger. And in the process, a hidden beauty emerges in us.”

John squeezed his shoulder. "Exactly, Mark. The important thing is not to be afraid of breaking. Because we sharpen as we break."
